Originated in 1943, this KATA was devised by the second president of the Kodokan Judo Institute Nango Jiro who is the nephew of Jigoro Kano. 

Tori should also use KIAI ( A loud Shout) in this Kata. Their are two reasons for this

 i) Will help unite the mental and physical  also faculties and release adrenalin into the bloodstream, thus preparing the body and mind for the emergency. 

ii) The sharp verbal reaction shocks the attacker, and is said that this could be psychologically shattering their ego and bad intentions.

It is said that it is essential to learn these exercises before actually attempting to learn kata. These sets consist of the basic traditional movement of feet. ie foot sliding movement which is required for all kata's.


 

Part One. Tai-sabaki (Body Management).

Is designed to teach  body evasion and management for Defence purposes.

1. Tai-no-ido.

Body Movement


2. Tsugi-ashi.

3. Migi-sabaki- & Hidari-sabaki

Right movement & Left movement.


4. Migi-mae--sabaki & Hidari-mae-sabaki.

Right  forward & Left forward movement.


5. Migi-harai & Hidari-harai.

Right Sweep & Left Sweep.


6. Migi-maware & Hidari-maware.

Right & Left Turn about.


7. Mae-shizume, Migi-shizume & Hidari-shizume.

Front Sinking down, right & left sinking down.


8. Hiza-ate.

Right & Left Knee strike.


 

Part Two. Ridatsu-ho  (Method of Escape).

Has incorporated escape methods for various wrist holds and arm locks and methods of striking UKE.

1.  Katate-tekubi-dori.

Single Hand wrist seizure.


2.  Ryote-katate-dori.

Double hand wrist Seizure.


3.  Shishi-gyaku-dori.

Reverse four finger seizure.


4.  Ude-kakae-dori.

Arm Wrap Seizure.


5.  Ushiro-dori.

Rear Seizure.


Part Three.     Seigo-ho  (Aggressive Defence Methods).

Was devised with an attacker confrontation at knifepoint.

1.  Ude-gyaku-dori.

Reverse Arm Hold.


2.  Ushiro-eri-dori.

Rear Collar Seizure.


3.  Ryote-dori.

Rear Neck Rope Choke.


4.  Ushiro-dori.

Rear Seizure.


5.  Kyohaku-dori.

Frontal Threat.
